AdBrite to launch auction-based ad space

Online marketing firm AdBrite is to introduce a new system of selling advertising space by way of auction.

Known as AdBrite 2.0, the system opens up the display ad market to smaller advertisers and websites and increases the effectiveness of targeted ad campaigns, MarketingVOX reports.

Advertisers will be able to bid for space on a per-impression basis and choose their ads according to criteria including keywords, demographics and content type. At present only text and banner advertising is available but video and mobile will eventually be added.

AdBrite places ads on around 28,000 websites – including CollegeHumor, Friendster and Answers.com - and the latest move is expected to involve blogs that would otherwise not be able to host advertising.

San Francisco-based AdBrite was founded by Philip Kaplan, who made his name with the F***edCompany.com website, which chronicled the dotcom collapse of the late 90s.

Kaplan has gained funding from Sequoia Capital, which also backed Google.
