Amazon extends online retail partner program
Major online retailer Amazon.com is expanding a program that allows independent internet sellers to use its network of distribution centres, the New York Times reports.'Fulfillment by Amazon' allows retailers who list their products on Amazon to use its centres around the world to fill orders, and now it will be open to vendors who place their items on other websites - even rival eBay.
Amazon is phenomenally popular in both the US and the UK. Last Christmas Amazon.co.uk enjoyed its best sales period ever, indicating that more and more people are shopping online and creating a vast audience for internet advertisers.
The new move will consolidate Amazon's position as the premier online retailer and expand its reach beyond its own websites.
"We have this beautiful, elegant, high-I.Q. part of our business that we have been working hard on for many years, said Amazon boss Jeffrey Bezos.
"We've gotten good at it. Why not make money off it another way?"
The system sees independents shipping their products to Amazon, which stores them with their own. A fee is charged depending on the weight of the item and the postal cost.
As internet advertisers becomes an increasingly important part of business strategy, enterprises can boost their search engine rankings using link building.
