In news that had gadget fans jumping up and down with excitement, Apple Computer announced the arrival of its long-rumoured mobile phone device at the annual Macworld Expo.Announcing the new iPhone, which will be pitted against the proposed Google phone, Microsoft's Zune and Yahoo Mobile, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs called it "a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone".
The phone will be a widescreen version of the video iPod, along with a touch screen and an internet connection – with carries with it great potential for online marketing.
It features EDGE and Wi-Fi technologies, as well as a "push" IMAP email service provided by Yahoo Mail that automatically pushes new email to a user's iPhone. Jobs said the "magical" device, which can download music and videos, would reinvent the mobile.
It will cost from £250 when it launches in the US and Europe in June, when it will take the fight to rival wannabe mobile providers, Microsoft and Google.
Microsoft's Robbie Back told analysts at the Las Vegas show that Apple will face a number of challenges with its iPhone and that Microsoft itself is looking to launch a mobile phone based on the Zune platform.
"It's probably on the table of things for us to look at, but not the number one thing we are focused on," he said. The Zune is Microsoft's answer to Apple's mega-selling iPod.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics has signed a deal with Google in order to launch a Google phone that will use Google's own mobile internet service.
According to Samsung, the handset will allow users to use G-mail, send instant messages and browse maps with a single click.
The Korean electronics firm has also struck a deal with Yahoo to allow Samsung mobile users to access Yahoo's search engine, email and instant messaging service.
Search leader Google has also held talks with mobile operator Orange to develop a Gphone designed for Google search functionality.
