Ask.com follows Google in revamping search engine

Askcom follows Google in revamping search engine Hot on the heels of Google's Universal Search, Ask.com has unveiled a revamp of its search engine called Ask3D.

The search engine's results page is now split into three columns (hence the 3D in the name), with the search results in the centre, tips for narrowing the search on the left, and images, videos and other details grouped on the right.

A search for Paris will therefore bring up conventional results in the centre, with videos and photos over on the right-hand side.

The search results themselves are accompanied by a snapshot view of the website (activated by passing the cursor over a binoculars icon), which also gives details about load times and the use of Flash.

In a similar fashion to Google's Universal Search, Ask has incorporated different search types - including local search, news search and blog search - into the results page.

However, there are significant differences between the two. Ask.com groups video results together, for example, working on the assumption that the user will want to know where to find the video results.

Ask, which has a five per cent share of the market in both the UK and the US, recently launched an "underground" style advertising campaign in a bid to persuade users to switch from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.
