Ask.com service will let users erase their search history

Askcom service will let users erase their search history Search engine Ask.com is to implement a service whereby users will be able to ensure that their search history is not retained by the company.

Privacy concerns have become a hot topic in the internet world, with Google recently announcing it would delete the final parts of the addresses it collects from user computers after 18 months.

However, Ask.com has gone further with its AskEraser product, which will allow users to search the internet anonymously by erasing search information behind themselves. When the system is enabled, Ask.com will not store any search terms, IP addresses, referring URL, or cookies.

As well as this, people's privacy settings will be clearly indicated on search pages so that searchers will know where they stand.

Jim Lanzone, Ask.com's chief executive, commented: "AskEraser is a great solution for those looking for an additional level of privacy when they search online.

"Anonymous user data can be very useful to enhance search products for all users, and we're committed to being open and transparent about how such information is used. But we also understand that there are some who are interested in new tools that will help protect their privacy further, and we will give them that control on Ask.com."

The product will be made available on Ask.com in the US and the UK by the end of the year, and worldwide by early 2008.

Ask recently unveiled its new contextual Internet Advertising network that it hopes will challenge Google's AdSense.

As well as this, it has revamped its search functionality to deliver a wide scope of results.
