BBC in talks with Google over ad tie-up

The BBC is discussions with Google regarding showing its programmes on the search giant's popular video sharing website YouTube.

It is thought that the Beeb hopes to generate income by taking a share of the contextual advertising that would run alongside the BBC content. BBC Worldwide, the commercial subsidiary of the BBC, is in the frame and could also have content shown on Google Video.

Google already has a deal with US sports behemoth NHL, and more and more broadcasters are keen to tie-up with internet companies as the lucrative nature of internet advertising becomes increasingly obvious.

NHL has a branded YouTube channel and CBS is another broadcaster that has an agreement with the video site, which was bought by Google for $1.65 billion last year.

According to the Guardian, details of the BBC – Google tie-up will be announced at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Wednesday.

Separately, the BBC is looking to advertise on the international version of its website, a move that has angered its rivals who argue that the broadcaster should remain non-commercial.

However, with a profit estimate of more than £100 million per year it will be hard to resist.
