Baidu beats Microsoft for search queries in December
Chinese search engine Baidu was the third-ranked search property globally in December 2007.Figures from metrix firm comScore show that the Chinese site commanded 5.2 per cent of searches by people aged 15 or over, with only Google and Yahoo having a larger market share.
Google took 41 billion searches, or a 62.4 per cent overall share, while Yahoo had 8.5 billion searches and a 12.8 per cent share.
Both US companies were therefore comfortably ahead of Baidu, but the Chinese search engine managed to beat Microsoft, which had 1.9 billion searches, or a 2.9 per cent market share.
Other top search performers included NHN Corporation, eBay, Time Warner, and Ask.
Baidu was the first Chinese company to be included in the NASDAQ 100 index, and operates using the same pay per click Internet Advertising model as Google. It is also making inroads into other markets with character-driven alphabets, such as Japan.
