EBay removes Google internet advertising in titan clash

EBay removes Google internet advertising in titan clash EBay has taken all its adverts off Google in the US following a spat regarding a plan by the latter to gatecrash eBay's Live merchant conference.

The auction website, which is by far Google's biggest advertising partner, is holding the conference in Boston this week and Google was planning to hold its own party nearby to promote its Checkout online payment service.

The move was seen as a slap in the face to eBay, whose own PayPal payment service is integral to its business and brought in around $1.4 billion of revenues last year.

Google cancelled the party - due to be held last night (June 14) - after eBay said it would stop advertising with the search engine, meaning it could not network with eBay bigwigs.

Many in the IT world will view Google's backtrack with a certain amount of Schadenfreude, because of the company's dominant position.

Consultant Roger Kay told the Times: "Google is the king of the hill and it is a natural human emotion to wish for the downfall of such a dominant company. The mantle has shifted from Microsoft to Google."

EBay spends around $100 million a year advertising with Google.
