EBay returns to Google internet advertising, but will also use Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL

EBay returns to Google internet advertising but will also use Yahoo Microsoft and AOL EBay is to place its ads back on Google, but in a more limited way than before.

Earlier this month Google triggered a much-publicised spat with eBay when it gatecrashed an eBay event to promote its Checkout online payment system.

EBay retaliated by removing all its advertising from Google.com - a significant blow to Google seeing as eBay is the top customer of the AdWords program, which allows firms to place internet ads on Google search pages.

Now eBay has said it will begin using AdWords again but will spread its business out over rival ad systems from the likes of Yahoo, Microsoft, Ask.com and AOL.

"I will tell you it will be in a much more limited way than it was before," eBay spokesman Hani Durzy told Reuters. "What we found is that we were not as dependent on AdWords as some people thought."

Google derives an extraordinary amount of revenue from its AdWords system, which even the smallest businesses or bloggers can use to place internet ads.

In the first quarter of 2007 the company's net income was $1 billion, increasing from $592 million. The surge was driven primarily by the company's core search advertising business.
