EC forecasts bright online future
The European Commission has predicted a bright future for the online sector, with revenue from online content estimated to reach €8.3 billion (£5.5 billion) by 2010 across the continent. This will represent growth of around 400 per cent, thanks mainly to the widespread uptake of broadband and the rollout of mobile networks, giving online advertisers a huge amount of potential.
"The long-awaited digital convergence is becoming an economic reality, creating great opportunities for Europe's consumers, content providers and technology industries," said the European Commissioner for information, society and media, Viviane Reding.
However, a study conducted by the EC found that there are various issues that need to be addressed – notably intellectual property rights and interoperability.
Many rights owners are loathe to exploit online possibilities for fear of cannibalising existing revenue models that may cross over.
The most pressing concern is connectivity, even though broadband is spreading quickly, and different standards used in different countries are also hindering what would otherwise be even stronger growth.
