Facebook opens up to third parties
Social networking site Facebook.com has undergone a transformation that will allow third party companies to embed various applications in user profile pages.
The website is one of the most popular networking sites along with MySpace, with around 3.5 million users in the UK - up from 1.6 million in January.
The new plans will allow firms such as Amazon to contribute applications to the site, whereby users can click through to the retailer by way of a book review, for example.
Facebook hopes to overtake Bebo and MySpace and become the number one social networking site by allowing companies to sell products and create software for use on the site.
"Until now, social networks have been closed platforms," said Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. "We're going to end that today. This is going to allow any developer worldwide to build full social applications."
The move will widen the scope for internet marketers, who already have an online audience of millions at their disposal.
