Facebook to refine targeted advertising

Facebook to refine targeted advertising Facebook, the social networking site, is at work on a new system of targeted Internet Advertising.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the massively popular site will allow marketers to place ads based on the information that people reveal about themselves.

"Eventually, it hopes to refine the system to allow it to predict what products and services users might be interested in even before they have specifically mentioned an area," the newspaper reports.

At the present time Facebook offers targeted ads based on age, sex and location, but the new system would refine this greatly by incorporating information about music, films and travel locations - although this information would not be shared directly with the advertisers.

It is not clear how this will affect Facebook's current ad deal with Microsoft which is thought to account for around half the site's £7.5 million profits.

Meanwhile it has emerged in a Sophos poll that around half of the companies in the UK block staff access to Facebook because of fears that it is impacting on productivity.
