Former predictions for online advertising spending lowered

Former predictions for online advertising spending lowered Predictions made in August about the rate of online advertising spending in the US this year have been revised by eMarketer.

According to the firm in the summer, the amount of money being allocated to online advertising this year would be around $24.9 billion (£16.8 billion).

However, eMarketer has now adjusted the forecast to $23.6 billion.

While lower, this still shows an increase of 11.3 per cent compared to last year's figures.

Though paid search is predicted to plunge this year and again into 2009, it represents the biggest area of growth overall, says David Hallerman of eMarketer.

"That's good news because online advertisers will spend more on search this year and in succeeding years than they will on any other interactive ad format," he assured.

Meanwhile, customer management firm Tealeaf's Geoff Galat advised online advertisers this week not to become complacent about their client base as the internet becomes a more popular channel.
