Google claims largest share of website visits as eBay looks to expand Google UK claimed an 8.2 per cent share of UK website visits in May, according to internet research company Hitwise.

The popular search engine, which derives most of its revenues from internet advertising, was streets ahead of the next most popular website, eBay UK, which had a 2.7 per cent market share.

Next were Windows Live Hotmail (2.64 per cent), Google.com (2.44 per cent), MSN UK (1.54 per cent), Bebo (1.52 per cent), Orange (1.47 per cent), MySpace (1.36 per cent), Yahoo Europe Mail (1.24 per cent) and Yahoo UK & Ireland (0.91 per cent).

In terms of search terms, "bebo" overtook "ebay" to become the most popular UK internet search, demonstrating the popularity of the social networking site.

Bebo has just signed an agreement with Apple's iTunes that will allow users to buy music directly from Bebo musician "profiles".

EBay had been the number one search term for all but one week over the past two years, Hitwise reports.

The auction site is now planning to expand its presence on the internet by way of integration with sites such as Facebook, Business Week reports.
