Google extends market share as Yahoo and others struggle to keep up

Google is extending its stranglehold on the online advertising market in the UK, with its programs such as AdWords continuing to prove irresistible to website owners wanting to monetize their sites.

The latest figures from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) show that the search giant last year gained a 43 per cent share of the record £2.016 billion that marketers spent on this medium, as they moved to shift ad dollars from the less profitable TV and print media.

In 2005 Google attracted 35 per cent of the total, so the company is clearly still in the ascendant as it does battle with rivals Yahoo and Microsoft.

These companies, along with Ask.com and other players, are desperately trying to erode Google's market share and the launch of Microsoft's Vista operating platform earlier this year could help with that.

The overall picture of internet advertising in the UK is very bright. The £2 billion-plus spent last year was up 41.2 per cent from 2005, and means that online now commands 11.4 per cent of all UK advertising revenues.

"The internet is proving itself a hugely popular mass medium and advertisers are continuing to switch more of their budgets online to build their brands and interact with their customers," the IAB said.

Companies wishing to take more part in online advertising should make use of link building.
