Google facing small lawsuit
Search engine giant Google is facing legal proceedings over alleged copyright infringements from its Google Video division. At least one lawsuit has been brought against the company over video material uploaded 'illegally', US Securities and Exchange Commission documents reveal, raising concerns among Google's backers about liability in this field.
Along with its own video business, the firm recently acquired the phenomenally successful internet-based video sharing service YouTube.
A statement from the company, however, sought to allay fears over the legal vulnerability of operating these sites.
"This is a small lawsuit over a single video that appeared briefly," it said. "We have procedures in place that allow copyright owners to tell us if their content is placed on Google Video without authorisation. When we receive appropriate notice, we quickly remove the content from Google Video."
At the time of Google's acquisition of the video download site, rumours that the company had set aside a 'legal reserve' for the defence of copyright actions were denied by chief executive Eric Schmidt.
