Google 'is world's most powerful brand'
Search engine giant Google has topped a list of the 100 most influential brands beating off the likes of Microsoft and Apple, it has been revealed.
Compiled by research firm Millward Brown Optimor, the BrandZ Top 100 placed the brand's value at $86.1 billion (£43.5 billion) – 30 per cent more than when similar figures were compiled last year.
The position of the search engine marked the third year running at the top for Google with the list being based on figures and surveys of consumers across the globe.
"This year's brand ranking demonstrates the importance of investing in brands, especially in times of market turmoil," said Joanna Seddon, chief of Millward Brown Optimor, in the statement.
"Strong brands generate superior returns and protect businesses from risk.
"Our data shows that strong brands continue to outperform weak ones in terms of market share and share price during recessions."
Brands General Electric, Microsoft, Coca Cola and China Mobile made up the top five in the list.
