Google overtakes ITV1 on UK ad revenue

Google overtakes ITV1 on UK ad revenue Google's advertising revenues have now exceeded those collected by ITV1, according to newly released figures.

UK third quarter results for the leading search engine showed it brought in £327 million in advertising between July and September, while ITV's main channel only reaped £317 million over the same period.

With Google's funds coming mainly from sponsored links, it managed to outstrip the ad revenues of ITV1 for the first time, despite the channel being boosted by showing the Rugby World Cup.

Although the balance seems to have shifted to Google, ITV1 is still set to bring in more advertising money for this year due to its lead from the previous half of the year and the upcoming Christmas boom.

However, the trend towards Online Marketing seems set to make Google the largest advertiser in Britain by the end of next year - prompting ITV executive chairman Michael Grade to call for a reduction in regulation for TV channels.

Commenting after Google overhauled Channel 4 in terms of ad revenue, he said: "Google, whose advertising revenues have overtaken Channel 4's and which has 75 per cent of the search advertising market, is wholly unregulated. Yet ITV labours under a host of anachronistic proscriptions about what it can and can't do."

Website owners can boost their ranking on Google by launching a sponsored link marketing campaign.
