Google settles Adwords case

Google settles Adwords case Web giant Google came out of its latest legal battle unscathed with a successful result for the company during a trademark infringement lawsuit brought by American Blind and Wallpaper Factory (ABWF).

The web search advertiser was accused of allowing rival companies to show advertising, as part of its Adwords scheme, that would appear when users searched specifically for ABWF, a window blinds reseller.

The suit, which was filed in 2003, is just the latest in a long line of trademark infringement cases that have targeted Google for its practice of allowing advertisers to bid for keywords including trademarked terms. Although the search engine has been successful in most, it has lost similar cases in Europe.

Michael Kwun, Google's managing counsel for litigation, said in a statement: "From the start, we've said that American Blind and Wallpaper Factory's claims were baseless and that Google's trademark policies are perfectly reasonable and lawful."

This latest lawsuit was scheduled to go to court in November, but the plaintiff agreed to drop its case. Neither party accepted any wrongdoing and both will pay their own legal bills.
