Holiday shoppers spend $19bn online in the US
An enormous amount of money is being spent online as people do their Christmas shopping, and in the US almost $19 billion has been spent over the November to December holiday season so far.
This figure, released by comScore, represents an 18 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, showing that online retail, and with it Internet Advertising, is very much on the up.
On Thursday, December 6th, some $803 million was spent, which was up by 28 per cent versus the same day in 2006.
Many people have been splashing out on consumer electronics, with this segment up by 43 per cent compared to a year ago, showing that people are more trusting of internet payment systems and willing to spend big online.
Tickets and apparel were also strong performers, but toy sales only grew by three per cent.
"This past week was very strong for online retailers as consumers spent more than $4.6 billion online, up 20 per cent versus year ago, making it the heaviest week of the holiday season to date," said comScore's Gian Fulgoni.
"Consumers seemingly restrained their early November holiday spending in the hopes of catching some attractive late-season deals, so we expect that the current week will outperform the past week as the heaviest of the season."
In Britain, Monday December 10th was the busiest ever for online retail, with shoppers spending more than £750,000 in a single minute at one point.
