How to keep a lid on spam
Spam is an unfortunate side-effect for many internet users, but its effects can be minimalised by the following of a few simple rules, one expert has claimed.
Jason Morrison of Google's Search Quality Team has offered tips in his Blog on how to implement some changes to fight the effects of spam.
Adding a simple CAPTCHA will help towards vetting automated services from individual users. Although it's not completely exhaustive, it will help to "make life a little more difficult for spammers".
Using a filtering system is also advisable, Mr Morrison urges, as "spammers use automated methods to besmirch your site, so why not use an automated system to defend yourself?"
Setting up a system which ensures all comments posted require approval as well as ensuring individuals have to sign up before posting comments on a site can also help to combat spam.
A poll by internet security organisation MessageLabs today found that people living in Egham, Surrey receive more spam than their counterparts in other English regions.
