Internet advertising neglected by many small businesses

Internet advertising neglected by many small businesses A new report indicates that most small businesses in the UK are missing out on the huge benefits that internet marketing can bring.

The UK Online study found that two thirds of small firms in Britain with fewer than ten employees do not have an internet connection, meaning that they are missing out on the growing audience they could be targeting.

These findings are particularly notable because the internet is a place where smaller firms can hope to compete effectively against the bigger corporations, because of the ease and value of internet marketing.

"Small businesses have been relatively slow to reap the rewards that an effective online presence can bring," said Shane Redding of the Institute of Direct Marketing, commenting on the results.

"There is a clear need for small business owners to better understand the opportunities available so that they can continue to thrive and compete against larger businesses."

UK Online's research also finds that half of those small firms that do have an internet connection do not in fact have a corporate website, and 17 per cent still use dial-up.

Another report from the Internet Advertising Bureau found that the UK's internet users are the most attractive in Europe to advertisers.
