Internet advertising set for boom

Internet advertising set for boom Internet advertising is set to grow six times faster than traditional media until 2009, according to Zenith Optimedia.

This will see the sector grow its share of the ad market from 6.1 per cent to 9.4 per cent.

The firm notes that the Olympic Games in Beijing are likely to give the internet advertising industry a shot in the arm, as companies look to cash in on the phenomenon.

"There will be plenty of scope for advertisers to tap into the popularity of the Games," the Zenith Optimedia report stated. In advertising overall, the Games are expected to generate more than $2 billion worth of extra ad revenue next year.

Globally, $26 billion was spent on online advertising last year, with this figure increasing to $33 billion this year, $41 billion in 2008 and $47 billion in 2009.

"No matter how high our expectations for online advertising, it always seems to exceed them," the report continued.

"We predict online ad spend will grow by 82 per cent between 2006 and 2009, while the rest of the ad market grows by 13 per cent."
