Internet news popular with Generation Y

Younger people are increasingly turning to the internet as their primary source of news.

In what is a positive development for internet advertisers, a study by KPMG International found that so-called Generation Y is "increasingly looking to the internet as a source of news and social interaction".

The study found that most people still watch television and read newspapers to find out the news. However, a significant proportion - 13 per cent - find out what's going on via the web.

Moreover, more younger people use new media, with 30 per cent sourcing their news on the internet. This demonstrates a growing trend for online news and will provide countless opportunities for internet marketersto take advantage.

Last year Channel 4 chief executive Andy Duncan warned his staff that Google UK would take more revenue from advertising than his channel.

"People need to wake up and realise that this is not just a cyclical issue - there is deep structural change, rather like global warming," he told the Times Online.
