Lycos launches video networking service
Web portal Lycos has unveiled a new movie service that will allow viewers to chat while they watch film classics.Lycos Cinema will allow people in different locations to watch a movie at the same time and post comments in a text chat window. The "watch and chat" feature will also allow whoever is hosting the movie to pause, rewind or fast-forward the movie, giving the effect of watching a film in a friend's living room.
Lycos will make money by showing video ads and sharing the profits with the owners of the movies, most of which will be classic and cult titles.
So far the company has acquired the licence to around 1,000 movies but it expects this number to more than treble over the coming six months.
The service will allow online advertisers to reach specific consumer demographics, particularly in the 18 to 35 age range, while independent filmmakers will have a platform from which to launch their own work to an audience of millions.
Around 25 million unique users visit Lycos per month.
