M&S could sell rival brand food online

MS could sell rival brand food online British retail chain Marks & Spencer is thinking about expanding its e-commerce presence by selling food on the internet, a director with the company has said.

Speaking at an industry networking event, commercial director Jim Waller said that the firm needs to be bolder in its attitude to the web, reports the Telegraph.

According to Mr Waller, the company needs to catch up with its rivals in the field of e-commerce - and one strategy being floated is the launch of an online food selling product that would offer rival brands' products alongside Marks & Spencer items.

Such a move - similar to Waitrose's Ocado service - would mark the first time the company has sold a non-Marks & Spencer branded item.

It has been three years since the retailer enlisted e-commerce giant Amazon - which recently launched a digital music store selling MP3s - to support its website development.

However, the commercial director claimed that Marks & Spencer has been too slow to embrace the internet.

"We can't afford to bury our heads in the sand about online," he said.

As High Street retailers like Marks & Spencer increasingly move online, the potential for Internet Advertising grows.
