Microsoft Universal Search Live

Microsoft Universal Search Live Microsoft is rolling out its own version of universal search in an attempt to gain more search users and to take some market share from dominant Google.

Here is an image of what the new Live Search looks like. You can see whether it works for your datacentre by doing a search at search.live.com.

The main improvements in the universal search are the related searches at the top right of the screen. Images, news, and even celebrity rankings will be displayed if found to be relevant.

The new layout makes sense as computer monitors are getting bigger and, more specifically, wider. The new layout also serves to pull the eye towards the paid for listings which can't hurt the commercial side of the business.

Microsoft will be hoping to get people to try their search offering again and will be attempting to prove that their relevance is on a par with Google. It remains to be seen whether they will be able to gain the trust of the general search user.

Relevance poor

I tried them a while ago and thought their results were weak. Pass!

Re:Relevance poor

They have quietly improved their results and IMO are as good as Google and far better than Yahoo! In commercial searches they are far more relevant than Google.

Rome wasn't built in a day

I like the look of it so far, not sure about the relevancy of the update (codenamed: Rome) yet though.

Everything seems to work faster and I like the Celebrity xRank and Musician xRank as a novelty but quite how useful it will be remains to be seen.
