Mobile operators to rival Google and Yahoo in search

In a bid to secure a significant slice of search advertising revenue, major European mobile operators are clubbing together to form a mobile search engine.

Vodafone, France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and others are to meet at the 3GSM trade show in Barcelona this week to discuss ways they can take some of the market share from the likes of Yahoo and Google.

Many mobile firms have already struck deals with major search companies but the industry as a whole believes it can retain a greater share of ad revenue if it develops its own service.

More and more users are expected to make use of mobile internet as the service is improved over the coming months. According to the Telegraph, more than 20 per cent of subscribers are expected to have access to broadband-speed mobile internet services by the end of this year.

Increased take-up means even more potential for internet advertising - something that is enjoying a boom within the PC-based internet market.
