Mobile social networking predicted to boom

Mobile social networking predicted to boom Over 140 million mobile users will connect to social networking services through their handsets by 2013, according to a recent report.

These users will generate more than $410 million (£231.2 million) in subscription revenues, with subscriber numbers set to rise sharply towards the end of the forecast period, ABI Research said.

It predicted that certain mobile versions of social networks will take up the same model used by popular services such as Facebook and MySpace, where free access is granted via the browser.

The report also highlighted the high potential of the medium for Online Advertising, although the tangible returns on this have not yet materialised, ABI Research's Michael Wolf noted.

He commented: "The advertising isn't that sophisticated yet. Social networking applications have to be uniquely mobile and not reliant entirely on advertising-based revenues, at least not initially."

MySpace recently launched a new pan-European mobile website, according to New Media Age.
