Most Brits shop online A growing number of UK web users shop online for products and services during the typical week, according to the latest Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) TouchPoints study, with Google the most popular site overall.

The survey examined the web habits of a sample of British internet users over the course of a week and found that 72 per cent of respondents have turned to e-commerce to look for particular items, Internet Advertising professionals may be interested to read.

About 44 per cent of web users shop on the internet for groceries, while adults in London were found to make more use of online stores than the rest of the population - some 78 per cent of Londoners said they shop online, with 49 per cent doing so for grocery products.

Meanwhile, the most popular goods for online purchase were discovered to be books, CDs and DVDs, followed by clothing, and event and travel tickets.

According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, online spending rose to more than £4.5 billion in the UK during May.

Meanwhile, Nielsen Online research suggests that Google was among the most used websites in the UK between June 2007 and May 2008.
