New Google business software will compete with Microsoft

IT giant Google unveiled a suite of business software in America on Thursday (February 22nd), meaning it will compete directly with software leader Microsoft.

The Google Apps package will combine email, website creation and instant messaging programs with another called Docs and Spreadsheets, which will allow users to read and edit documents created with Microsoft Word and Excel.

It will also guarantee uptime, as well as technical support and Gmail support for Blackberry devices.

As well as being cheap - businesses will be required to pay a $50 annual fee - the products will be stored by Google and accessible over the internet, meaning that there is no need for corporate IT networks.

The announcement comes soon after Microsoft launched its latest version of Windows, Vista, and the accompanying Office software amid much fanfare.

Such a low price and a high degree of usability may dissuade many from purchasing Vista, as they can experiment with a new system with little cost risk.

Analysts stress that it may take some time for Google to prove itself in terms of security and quality, but for internet marketers it certainly spells good news, since it will drive more and more firms online.

"With Google Apps, you can give employees powerful communication and collaboration tools that will help bring their productivity to the next level," said a Google spokesman.
