New Wikipedia search engine, Wikiseek, to challenge Google

A new search engine, Wikiseek, has been launched by Searchme Inc and could pose a threat to more established players in the industry such as Google.

The service works by restricting its searches to pages from Wikipedia and those sites that are referenced within Wikipedia. The creators argue that this makes the search engine more authoritative and less subject to spam.

Supported by money generated by internet advertising, the site will be updated based on user feedback. However, it is not to be confused with the recently-announced Wikiasari, an open-edit service that allows users to re-rank search results to make them more relevant.

Using Searchme's category refinement technology, Wikiseek benefits from user input that allows it to provide suggested search refinements. The company argues that this makes results more relevant than conventional search engines.

Google is the undisputed search market leader, helping countless online advertisers to sell their products, but it is facing challenges from others beside Wikiseek.

Recently, Yahoo teamed up with IBM to offer a free business search tool that directly competes with Google's enterprise search system.
