Semantic web tipped to change search market

Semantic web tipped to change search market Almost eight in ten decision-makers in the search engine market have indicated in a new study that the semantic web is having a significant effect on the sector.

The survey from StrategyEye Digital Media showed that 78 per cent of firms have confirmed that search development is now hinging on the semantic web as a result of the core feature of improved relevancy.

The report noted that Microsoft's acquisition of natural language firm Powerset earlier this year is likely to cause more organisations to consider the role that semantic search can play in their operations.

"Over the longer-term, semantic search technologies will become a reality if the trade off between the cost of scaling the platform and the monetisation potential can be balanced," StrategyEye said in its report.

The study also revealed that companies generally expect to maintain strong levels of investment in digital channels, particularly Online Advertising and social media.

A recent IDC report predicted that global spending on Internet Advertising will grow to represent 13.6 per cent of total ad expenditure by 2011.
