News Feed Deal Between Google News and AF Presse Over Contenu De Nouvelles

Agence France-Presse started a legal battle with Google news over two years ago for publishing their news content without the AFP's permission

The Paris based news agency challenged Google news for $17.5 million in damages over copyright infringement.
G news was posting AFP's breaking news headlines, pictures and summaries with links to the main AFP news content pages.

Google news displays news headlines, images and summaries from news sources like:
Travel News, Property News, and Marketing News as well as about 4,500 other news sources.

The issue that AF Presse had with Google was that they were posting AFP's news content without their permission.


The News Content Deal


Kaufman, represening AFP said, "We signed a license agreement that will enable them to use AFP's newswire content in all Google services as well as in its new products that are coming up". No further details or financial terms were disclosed by either party.

Google emphasised that they are very optimistic about the new agreement, Ricardo Reyes claiming that "it will enable the use of AFP's newswire content in innovative, new ways that will dramatically improve newswire content on the Internet." he added "new collaboration will ensure that AFP's original journalism and breaking news are easily discoverable on Google services and in particular on Google News."

Google is still fighting copyright suits with Copiepresse, representing French- and German-language newspapers
In February a Brussels court ordered Google to remove links to Belgian newspapers.

Most Newspapers would not object to Google linking to their content since it directs targeted traffic to their news websites and thereby boosting online advertising revenue. But the Tribune media group this week has indicated he may challenge Google's use of its content according to MSN Money
