News Summary 030709

In digital news this week, online entertainment news sites reported a growth in online traffic whilst Microsoft’s Bing announced it would start indexing Twitter.

News delivery online has become increasingly important as consumers’ primary source of information. The lighter side of news in the entertainment section with celebrity gossip and rumour has grown particularly well in the last few months, with Americans spending 15 million hours reading entertainment news stories in May.

In light of the tragic death of the King of Pop Michael Jackson last week, and the overwhelming response from digital media, online monitors comScore expect June 2009 to be one of the most prolific months ever for entertainment news sites in the US.

Gossip site TMZ, which was the first site credited with breaking the Michael Jackson story , was ranked as the second most visited news site for entertainment in May, while Yahoo!’s dedicated celebrity page omg! doubled the number of users over the last 12 months.

Jack Flanagan, comScore’s executive vice president said: “May was one of the heaviest months on record for entertainment news consumption, but it will almost certainly be surpassed in June with the shocking news of Michael Jackson’s death driving high volumes of traffic to these sites.”

Meanwhile, the Bing search team announced in their blog that Bing would start indexing key Twitter users as part of their search engine results. Microsoft will recrawl prolific Twitter users such as Demi Moore and Ryan Seacrest every 60 seconds. The Bing blog post said that they thought the “premium of immediacy” with tweets was important, and hence will start rolling out Twitter indexing over the coming weeks.
