The big search engines have been dominating the news again, with a Wall Street Journal report suggesting earlier this week that Microsoft is looking at a new way of acquiring Yahoo!'s search operation.

According to the publication, sources have indicated that Microsoft is in talks with companies such as Time Warner and News Corp to make a bid for Yahoo! that could see Microsoft walk away with its search business and the partners buy into other parts of the firm.

AOL has launched a new gaming site with extensive advertising opportunities, while perhaps the biggest news of the last few days is that of Google being ordered by a US judge to hand over all of its YouTube user data to Viacom as part of the latter's lawsuit regarding alleged copyright infringement.

A significant new study from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising suggests that online shopping is continuing to boom in the UK.

Meanwhile, new research by Nielsen Online has suggested that Google remains one of the most popular websites among UK web users, although MSN Messenger has been the most used web application in the last year.
