Microsoft was in the news this week as it launched its own version of universal search, in a bid to capture some market share from Google.

It returns results in the form of images, news and even celebrity rankings if relevant.

Other innovations were witnessed in the vertical search engine space, where companies such as Retrevo and Become are making it easier for consumers to gather information about specific products. Google beware?

Also, Yahoo! unveiled its new voice-enabled search function for mobiles that promise to make it easier for consumers to answer queries.

The voice search function will work by returning answers to mobiles after the user has spoken a request into the device, and will form part of Yahoo!'s OneSearch version 2.0.

In Google's neck of the woods, staff at subsidiary DoubleClick are facing redundancy as the company looks to trim around 300 jobs.
