Microsoft could be looking to pursue a takeover of Facebook, a report suggested this week.According to The Times, the social networking site, in which the software giant purchased a $240 billion (£120 billion) stake last October, could replace Yahoo! as Microsoft's prize target, although formal talks have yet to materialise.
Meanwhile, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation asserted that it is not discussing deals with Microsoft, Yahoo! or AOL, a report in Reuters revealed.
The company's chief operating officer Peter Chernin said it was "very comfortable" with its current web positioning.
Google, however, hinted that an extension of its two-week ad tie-up trial with Yahoo! could be forthcoming.
Before the company's annual meeting this week, chief executive Eric Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brin pointed to the firms' shared values and the success of the pilot initiative.
And comScore statistics released this week confirmed Google's position as search leader, accounting for eight in ten web searches conducted in Europe in March.
