Hitwise figures confirmed this week that Google led search activity in the US last month, accounting for almost 70 per cent of queries.

However, rival search engine blinkx has outperformed Google Video in the UK due to its simple video search process, Rob Waugh wrote in thisismoney.co.uk this week.

YouTube, the video streaming website owned by Google, is increasingly attracting the attention of advertisers, product manager with YouTube Shiva Rajaraman told Advertising Age.

New Advertising Association figures indicate that the sector grew by about 40 per cent last year.

In other news, CNet News reported this week that Yahoo! is conducting an internal examination of a revised version of Microsoft's bid for the company, which collapsed in May.

The new deal being mulled over by the search pioneer is scaled down compared to the initial offer, the report suggested.

Meanwhile, a new development from Microsoft, entitled TownSquare, is a social network which acts as a testing platform for new technology initiatives, according to Computerworld.
