A new software package offered by Microsoft - entitled WorldWide Telescope - was launched this week, allowing users to explore images of galaxies, star systems, and planets for free.The programme was launched on Monday and uses images from a number of sources, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope.
Elsewhere, it was reported this week that investors in both Microsoft and Yahoo! are unhappy with the way in which a proposed takeover was pursued last week, with Yahoo! chief executive Jerry Yang and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer attracting most of the criticism.
Meanwhile, new plans announced by Google regarding its Friend Connect service may mean that the online world is entering into a new era of social technologies.
Similar strategies have been launched by social networking services Facebook and MySpace, both of which allow users to transport data between user-generated portals.
In other Google news, the firm recently revealed that it intends to increase the online advertising revenue from video sharing website YouTube, with a number of marketing strategies planned to integrate with videos that are being viewed on the site.
