Online giant Yahoo! unveiled a brand-new open-source platform allowing developers to create geo-aware applications this week.

The Fire Eagle platform enables users to input and manage their location data for use with a range of applications and saves time and money for developers wary of building their own location-targeting technology from scratch, Yahoo! said.
Meanwhile, a new Ofcom report showed that spending on online advertising in the UK rose by almost 40 per cent last year, driven by the paid search category.

A study by Hitwise and Experian indicated that marketers may need to refine their search engine optimisation strategies to take into account the fact that a growing number of searchers now conduct queries for brands rather than generic terms.

Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Google, revealed in an interview on American TV that the search engine has no intention of placing ads on its homepage, while eMarketer has predicted that spending on video ads will see significant gains in the United States by 2013.
