Yahoo! reported lower profits during the second quarter of 2008 compared with the same time last year, it was reported.However, year-on-year marketing revenue services at the company - including those generated through internet advertising - rose seven per cent year-on-year.
Meanwhile, search engine Google formally launched its new user-generated article database system.
Entitled Knol, the site permits users to write their own encyclopedia-style entries on a range of topics.
Although the service resembles international article database Wikipedia, Knol differs in that it allows authors to attach their names to their entries.
It also incorporates Google's AdSense ads, with writers set to receive a portion of the revenue generated through these if they choose to display them alongside their articles.
Finally, Microsoft announced that it is set to enter into an extended partnership with Facebook, which will see services provided by the software giant used to integrate web search and paid search functions on the social networking site.
