Newspaper websites see strong online advertising growth

Newspaper websites see strong online advertising growth Advertising expenditure for newspaper websites in the US grew by nearly a quarter to $750 million in the first quarter of 2007, Marketing Charts reports.

Figures from the Newspaper Association of America show that the sector grew by 22.3 per cent as the print media increasingly turned to the online channel, and consumers' preferences change.

Over the three months, advertising on newspaper websites made up more than seven per cent of total ad spending by newspapers, as opposed to 5.5 per cent for the same period a year before.

And in a further sign that newspapers are losing out to the web-based media, total advertising expenditure at newspapers and their websites declined by 4.8 per cent year-on-year, to $10.6 billion.

Total Online Advertising revenue in the UK increased by 47 per cent in 2006 to more than £2 billion, according to the latest figures from the Advertising Association.
