Newspapers boost online ad expenditure

Newspapers boost online ad expenditure Expenditure on advertising for newspaper websites increased significantly during the second quarter of the year, indicating the growing importance of investment in these sites.

Figures released by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) revealed that ad spend for the online versions of news publications grew 19.3 per cent to $796 million during the period.

"As newspapers transform themselves into multimedia platforms offering a diverse portfolio of print and digital products, publishers continue to deliver the award-winning, innovative content that makes newspapers the most trusted source of news and information," said John F Sturm from the NAA.

"Advertisers know that newspaper websites are ideal for reaching online users with the most attractive demographics."

Online Newspaper advertising now accounts for seven per cent of total newspaper ad spend, up from 5.4 per cent for the same quarter of last year, the report showed.

A recent study from Veronis Suhler Stevenson forecast that Internet Advertising in the US will increase 21 per cent each year to hit $62 billion, topping the $60 expected to be spent on newspapers.
