Ofcom reduces time it takes to change mobile number
Mobile phone users who switch to another provider will be able to carry over their existing number in just two days.Until now, it took up to five days for a mobile phone number to be migrated from one provider to another. A central database where all telephone numbers are stored is being created in order to reduce lead times.
Telecoms regulator Ofcom hopes that the time taken to execute a number portability request will fall to two hours towards the end of the year.
A spokesperson for Ofcom said: "These rules will make it quicker and easier for consumers to keep their number, thereby strengthening competition and consumer convenience."
Ofcom believes it will cost £12 million to build the central database, although Vodafone claims it could be as much as £120 million.
Last week, Ofcom said that airlines have permission to offer mobile communication services on UK aircraft.
