Online SMEs fall into three categories

Small and medium sized (SME) online businesses in the UK fall into three categories, according to new research.

Fasthosts believes that, as more and more businesses begin to trade online, companies would be wise to figure out what category they belong to themselves.

Firstly, there are the personal users - small businesses or individuals who are keen on saving money and who tend to use basic shared hosting services. These websites are usually small and comprise only a few pages. These businesses are likened to compact cars - economical.

Next, there are entrepreneurs, who are equated with convertible cars. They are versatile and dynamic and often have good business ideas and strong financial motivation. They are also updated more regularly than personal user sites.

Finally, the serious users (sports cars) are "high performance outfits" that use technology to gain specific advantages. The online element of these firms is an integral part of their business plan.

Online marketing is one way to maximise the value of your own online presence. eMarketer research suggests that Internet Advertising revenues in the US increased by more than 30 per cent last year, and other reports suggest that the UK market holds still more potential.
