Online retail figures just keep on growing

Online retail figures just keep on growing New figures indicate that online retail spending will exceed a whopping £15 billion in the final quarter of 2007, as Christmas shoppers shun the high street in favour of the altogether more convenient internet.

IMRG figures show that online shopping is growing significantly, in spite of worries in the wider economy. In fact, the internet channel is growing 20 times faster than high street shops.

Should the £15 billion figure be achieved, it will represent a 60 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, and UK shoppers are likely to spend £42 billion online over the year as a whole.

Such figures are almost too staggering to contemplate. However, what is quite clear is that those websites with online advertising are sure to reap the benefits of an audience of literally millions, with money to burn in the run-up to the festive day.

Other figures from comScore indicate that web shopping increased by 23 per cent for the third week of November, compared to activity over the course of October.

The company's Bob Ivins said: "Online shopping is one of the most popular of internet activities."
