Online retailers triumph over high street at Xmas

On the 26th Amazon claimed have had its best ever Christmas with 750,000 orders, pointing out that consumers are conveniently clicking away online rather than lining up in queues with traditional high street shoppers.

John Lewis and Marks & Spencer are predicted to be among the best performers this Christmas with bargain hunters scrimmaging to buy cut price goods. However, other high street retailers are expected to face insolvency in 2007 due to their poor seasonal performance, according to some accountants.

Retailers have reported strong sales for luxury goods, grocers and online stores in contrast to profit warnings from middle market retailers. HMV and Woolworths have issued profit warnings because of poor Christmas sales.

In the absence of official figures, it is too soon to draw conclusions about December trading, but Direct Traffic News will keep you posted at High Street vs. Online.
