Product map could change the face of online retail

The world of online retail has taken a step forward with the introduction of a comparison shopping website called BrowseGoods.com.

Sure to drag many internet-wary shoppers from the high street and onto the web, the Dotted Pair-powered engine displays countless products on a kind of map that the user can zoom into, and then buy direct from retail giant Amazon.

"Perfect for shoppers who are not sure about the exact item they are looking for but will know it when they see it," said AdvertisingLab, which predicted that this display approach could be adopted by more online stores.

So far the website has four departments - shoes, sports, toys and watches - and promises that more are coming soon.

A user can browse the shoes department and zoom in on "men's shoes", then "athletic & outdoor", then "golf", then "Ecco" and buy those men's Ecco Casual Cool GTX shoes he's been looking for, direct from Amazon.

Dotted Pair notes that users browsing the site will be encouraged to make unplanned purchases. Since the format shows similar products next to one another, shoppers will be encouraged to browse as they would in a high street store.

A recent survey by uSwitch predicted that online sales in the UK could hit £40 billion in 2007.
