Retail traffic 'driven by search'
Search engines were the main driver of consumer traffic to retail comparison sites at the beginning of November, according to new figures.Research from Hitwise revealed that during the week ending November 3rd, Google referred 20 per cent of visits to comparison shopping sites, while 14 per cent came via Yahoo.
Compared to the same week in 2006, traffic to leading comparison retail sites such as Amazon and Wal-Mart grew 56 per cent.
"As we enter the holiday shopping season, consumers are beginning to research potential gift purchases and compare prices earlier than last year especially with retailers beginning to roll out seasonal promotions," said Hitwise director of research Heather Dougherty.
According to the report, Amazon received the most visits in the Hitwise index with 11.4 per cent, followed by Wal-Mart with 6.34 per cent.
Among the most popular search terms typed into search engines and directed to shopping comparison sites were 'laptop computers', iPods, LCD TV and digital cameras.
According to a separate Hitwise report, traffic on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) in the US increased by 52 per cent for the week ending November 10th compared to the same week of 2006.
Search Engine Marketing is becoming increasingly important for retailers looking to attract growing numbers of online shoppers.
